The Sun

The Sun

Today’s card is The Sun, number nineteen of the Major Arcana. This is the standard for a more traditional tarot deck as well as the Shapeshifter deck. The Major Arcana are used as a teaching tool to introduce the initiate (seeker) to the principles of occult worship. Each represents a point along our evolutionary path as magickal beings and discussed the science, and the mysticism, that work in tune to guide our journey as spiritual seekers. As in any tarot deck, this journey begins with Initiation (The Fool), representing innocence and new beginnings. But while the Major Arcana have a finite number, the journey through them continually begins again as the spiral of our existence plays out.

The keywords for this card are Creativity, Teamwork, and Achievement. Appearing here is a griffon/man; he is standing on the roots of the Tree of Life which are floating above the material world (Earth) that you can see pictured below. Golden light shines forth like bright fields of knowledge in all directions as he seems to be holding aloft the life-giving Sun. The griffon is a magickal creature with enormous power; part human (tamed), part lion (wild), and part eagle (spirit ally), it is said that a griffon lines its nest with gold to represent the merging energies of the Earth and Sky. While from Earth the Sun is a source of unlimited energy, it is also one of the thousands of stars in the Universe and has the energies of a star. Thus, the Sun embodies the collective intelligence of the Universe and affects all life on our planet. The opposite of the Moon, the Sun’s energy is decidedly masculine, and its job is to make all things visible.

The shapeshifter holds the brilliant Sun in his hands, symbolizing the partnership between mankind, the cosmos, and Nature. He ‘upholds’ the many diverse paths of knowledge embodied by the Sun and represents perfect balance between the conscious and subconscious minds. His serpentine tail signifies the ancient truths (snake), and a lone seagull is seen flying in the foreground, symbolic of divine messages and communication.
While helping you to understand the balance of energies and successful combinations in energy fields, the Sun also represents man’s contribution to creation, teamwork, and cooperation. This card radiates creative energy and the eternal flame, indicating the burning fire of mental acuity and prowess. It also represents success in relationships, energized partnerships, material happiness and attainment, and achievement in all fields of study, especially those that bring to light into the darkness and those involving Spirit. The Sun is a truly positive card and represents motivation and liberation where we seek our own enlightenment and find our own personal path to Oneness.
May the brilliant light of the Sun energize you today and bring with it creativity and enlightenment!
