The Double

The Double

Today’s card is The Double, and is number Twenty-One of the Major Arcana. While this number is associated with The Universe in a more traditional tarot deck, the Shapeshifter deck has added two Majors to their deck; this is one of them. The Major Arcana are used as a teaching tool to introduce the initiate to the principles of occult worship. Each represents a point along our evolutionary path as magickal beings and discussed the science, and the mysticism, that work in tune to guide our journey as spiritual seekers. As in any tarot deck, this journey begins with Initiation (The Fool), representing innocence and new beginnings. But while the Major Arcana have a finite number, the journey through them continually begins again as the spiral of our existence plays out.

On this beautiful card we see the a fox/woman moving and doubling between dimensions. Part woman and part fox, this woman is also part water, part tree, and part stars as well. Like the Celtic weave eon her robe, the Double card is woven together as one and embodies. The power we each hold to assume any form and the ability to acquire power. She appears as a red fox, symbolizing the vitality and energy of Oneness and wears a single ruby ring and spiral disks in her ears, all signs of the Goddess and her life-creating power. She stands in a pool of star filled water that ripples outward in tiers like veils of awareness. Her hair weaves into the large stand of oaks in full leaf that appear in the background.

In European and Asian folklore, women shapeshifting into foxes and foxes into women are common. This practice, while not well known in western culture is the feminine version of lycanthropy. Most modern representations of this ability are seen in the latest Werewolf movie, some nostalgic and some frightening, but all based on the ability to shapeshift on the spiritual plane. It is said that foxes can become invisible, hear everything that is said, and read anything that is written. Akin to the Selkies, one tale speaks of a man who came home at the end of the day to find his house in perfect order and dinner on the table. Upon investigating, he discovered that a fox/woman was using his house in the day while we worked in the field. One day as she was in her human form, he stole her fox skin; they lived happily together for many years until one day she discovered her skin, wrapped it about her, and shifted back into her foxy self, never to be seen or heard from again.

The Double card is one of astral travel along the continuum. Beyond primary awareness, you will find a multi-dimensional place where you exist also exist; in essence, you have the ability to inhabit both of these worlds at once. Synchronicity with the God and Goddess as you make your journey will help you access this ability. Learn the cunning of the fox by exercising discipline and using your power in a positive way; fame and prosperity will be yours for the taking if you so desire.
