Today’s card is the Spindle, also known as Euonymus europaeus in scientific terms. This tree gets is name from its primary purpose, the making of spindles for use in weaving. Curiously the round, pink berries that decorate the spindle resemble a pomegranate; when opened they reveal tiny orange seeds. The symbolism of the pomegranate is well known in the tale of Demeter and Persephone, who in Greek tradition is stolen away by Hades, God of the Underworld. By spinning a thread to guide her, the fates assisted Demeter in locating her daughter and bringing her back to the physical realm. The Goddess Ariadne also wove a red thread that helped Theseus defeat the Minotaur and find his way out of the maze which this beast called home. In this way we see that fate (destiny) is linked to the Underworld.
The weavers of Norse mythology had a close association with the Spindle as well and the sacred arts of spinning and weaving. Both the Norns, and the Fates of Greek mythology were responsible for weaving the thread of life and cutting it according to your destiny. These goddesses wove each human life into a grand tapestry representing the whole of creation and by cutting this string, your life would come to an immediate end. Stories tell of heroes who found their way into an underground cave where they be able to change the destiny of themselves or others by rewearing or unraveling the tapestry of creation and changing the direction of the ‘fate’. The spindle is also associated with childbirth and the Fates were known to occasionally assist during the birth of a mighty hero.
When this card appears in a reading, it is here to tell us that our fates are not woven into the fabric of time and we have the ability to change the picture that they are forming.
