Seven of Water

Seven of Water

Today’s card is the Seven of Water (Cups), also known as Desire. In the Shapeshifter Tarot, as in other traditional decks, the Element of Water represents the emotions and matters of the heart, love in all its forms, friendship and compassion, gentle healing, and all matters concerning blood, the circulatory system, and menstrual flow. Water also represents bodies of water, all underwater and amphibious creatures, ships and travel by sea, beaches, seashells, and seaweed. It comes sometimes in waves and storms, crashing into us with force and overwhelming us if we let it. It is also where the Moon resides, whose power affects the tidal flow of the Earth itself.

The keywords for this card are Craving, Sensitivity, Destiny, and Indulgence. Seen here are three beautiful women shapeshifters, akin to the swan children of the sea God Llyr. With human heads and bodies, they perch gracefully on three large rocks like the Sirens of legend. Like sirens, these sea nymphs sing with bewitching sweetness, embodying the concept of the enchanting but sometimes deadly supernatural lover. The dark haired seagull/woman sits and plays a magickal harp, symbolic of the voice of the Gods. She sings as if to the birds and celestial spheres overhead. The light-haired shapeshifter combs her long flowing tresses. Her brush is carved with a never ending Celtic knot; this signifies the untangling of life’s problems and concerns. In the foreground, a red-haired woman is seen merging with the ocean and sky; she is connected to all things as her hair merges with the ripples of water around her. This is a symbol of inner strength and shows us that we are connected sensually and spiritually with all things in creation. Three seagulls, messengers of the Gods, circle overhead, the light from their wings weaving a protective shield around the Shapeshifter women.
