Today’s card is the Four or Earth (Pentacles), also known as Legacy. This correspondence is in line with more traditional tarot decks and is the base of the Minor Arcana. Earth rules over home, hearth, and family, job, finance, and prosperity, and physical health and well being, birth, death, and rebirth. While all other Elements are at play in this process, our journey must be based on solid footing, on roots firmly placed in the Mother, if we are to grow and be healthy.
The keywords for this card are Achievement, Perseverance, and Joy. In this scene, a man and woman shapeshifter are merging with the Elk; this animal is a symbol of constructive power. The elk/man and woman lead the herd through a canyon, representing the birth canal. The Steep cliffs on both sides of the background take on the appearance of a woman’s thighs in the birthing position. An intricate spider’s web is also seen here; it is tying all four elements (earth, air, fire, and water) together. The term ‘spider’ comes from the Old English word ‘spinnan’ which means ‘to spin’. The thread seems to come from a sliver fir tree which holds the seeds of potential. The fir is known as the Tree of Birth and is considered female, along with the Yew, her sister that represents death. Flowering lavender can be seen on the ground along with purple clovers. The lavender is a powerful healing herb and lends if energy to living a long life while the clover’s three leaves represent the Triple Goddess.
