Today’s card is the Five of Earth (Pentacles), also known as Loneliness. This Element is the base of the Minor Arcana and rules over home, hearth, and family, job, finance, and prosperity, and physical health and well being, birth, death, and rebirth. In working our way through the lessons of the tarot, we discover that the human journey starts in this Element as we learn to feed and clothe ourselves, care for ourselves through continence and hygiene, and to communicate our needs to others by relating love, pain, fear, and joy. While all other Elements are at play in this process, our journey must be based on solid footing, on roots firmly placed in the Mother, if we are to grow and be healthy.
The keywords to this card are loneliness, unemployment, and loss. Jagged distant mountains are seen framing a large pine tree and is covered with snow and icicles. The pine tree is symbolic of the immortal state of the soul and in this image it is surrounded by snow and ice representing rigidity and inner coldness of the life force and spirit. On the ground under the trees, many unhappy faces can be seen in the rocks. These faces represent the moments in our lives when we must face the results of our personal indiscretions, lack of judgment and personal responsibility, or words without thought. The roots (which bind us to our actions) wind among the stones and dig deep into the barren Earth, representing the body and the subconscious. If we are stubborn and cling to negative thoughts and actions, these ties can run the length of this lifetime and the one to come. A porcupine can be seen sitting on a branch of the tree. While symbolizing prickly situations that we may have created for ourselves, wither in this life or a past one, this little creature also represents the ability of one to create their own path in life by learning to discriminate and embracing the ability to learn from past mistakes and change your future.
At this time, be aware of your words and actions when disagreeing with others. You could inadvertently create a rift that is unpleasant and long-standing, possibly including the loss of a friendship. This is also a possible sign of the loss of a job through corporate downsizing or misunderstanding. If yo should be affected by a loss of this nature, take the time to do some self-examination and spiritual seeking. This will help you prevent future recurrences by putting an end to unproductive ties, habits, or lifestyles.
May you be thoughtful today as you encounter coworkers, friends, and family. What you don’t say today may benefit you tomorrow!
