Five of Cups

Five of Cups

Today’s card is the Five of Cups, also known as the Lord of Disappointment. Cups represent the Element of Water which rules over the heart and matters of love, friendship, compassion, and healing, charm, beauty, entertainment, and the arts, including the Occult. Thus, while Fire is the Creative Force, Water is the emotion that inspires us to Create. All art forms use symbolism, whether through paint, music, poetry, acting, or dance, which in turn connects with the subconscious mind, where magick occurs.

The principle this card brings to our awareness is the emotional experience of still being in love with someone who deserts you, either with our without foreknowledge. Different from the loss of a friendship, the feeling created by this sort of loss is traumatic and is often the hardest to face. Many a person comes to a Tarot or Oracle reader asking if their true love will return to them. Still others let all other aspects of their life fall into disrepair while they ‘drown’ in the Water of the their broken heart. This type of depression, while not surprising as a short term response to the abrupt end of your marriage or long term relationship, is unhealthy and can lead to mental illness if it is allowed to linger for too long a time. Therefore, the magick associated with this card works to alleviate depression, build self esteem, and look to the present and future for another possible love interest.

Too many people also spend their time trying to repair a broken love affair or marriage. Sitting around anticipating the return of a lost love, or even worse, permitting the recurrence of this abandoning behavior over and over again, does not make it better. If the ship on that has already sailed, or if you are the one that has made all the concessions, forgiven all the offenses, and suffered all the woes, this especially applies to you. Take off the blinders and look around! There is probably a beautiful man or woman who would love to spend time with you, getting to know your real self and all the special things that make you love-able! Statistics show that 90% of couples who reunite don’t make it anyway. Having said that, if you are planning to work magick to mend your broken heart, don’t expect it to work, or work well, if you insist on clinging to a romantic notion regarding your previous relationship.

If you are ready to move on, then try this simple spell to relieve depression and help open your heart to new love. Starting on the first day of the New Moon, fill the bathtub with nice warm bath water. Make it slightly hotter than normal so that you have time for the next part. As the tub is filling, add red food coloring to the water until it is bright pink (be sure to use food grade dye or you will be pink for quite a few days). Visualize the water pouring from the spigot as hearts, big and small ones, pink and red ones, tumbling into the tub. A few drops of rose oil can also be added to the water. Strip and gaze into the tub. Imagine all the weight of your sadness and depression as dark energy and push it from your body into the ground through the bottoms of your feet. Then step into the bath. As you sink in to the warm water, visualize yourself being surrounded in the loving embrace of the Mother or Universal Force, being healed, loved, and re-energized. Start with at least 5 minutes and increase until you are soaking for 11 or more minutes. Repeat this process each night for a week.

Obviously this card is not a happy one! It indicated the loss of a lover or spouse, either suddenly or after a long struggle for happiness. It can also represent disillusionment; that state where you open your eyes to realize that the object of your love is an idiot and you have been a fool for far too long! Either way, you are about to realize that you are born alone, and you will die alone, so a few more months (or years) until you find that special someone wont hurt. If this applies to you, take this time to grieve, heal, and love yourself. This will make it easier for you to open up when the right one does come along.

May you be spared a broken heart today and always!
