Today’s card is called Balance and it is number fourteen of the Major Arcana. In a more traditional tarot deck, this card would be known as Temperance. The Major Arcana are used as a teaching tool to introduce the initiate to the principles of occult worship. Each represents a point along our evolutionary path as magickal beings and discussed the science, and the mysticism, that work in tune to guide our journey as spiritual seekers. As in any tarot deck, this journey begins with Initiation (The Fool), representing innocence and new beginnings. But while the Major Arcana have a finite number, the journey through them continually begins again as the spiral of our existence play out.
The keywords of the card are Self Control and Harmony. Seen here, floating effortlessly in the primordial ocean of creative energy and life-force, are a woman and her children. The ocean is the spiritual container for all life on all levels of being and, as such, holds no fear for the humans who are in harmony with themselves and all other life in the Universe. About them swim their guardians and guides: The dolphins represent the contented understanding that they have access to the creative energy needed to create/change any aspect of their lives that has slipped out of balance. The starfish, a five pointed star, is an ancient Goddess symbol and also a magickal sigil for the protection from and revulsion of evil.
The spiral seashells are a symbol of the constant presence of the Great Goddess which has been with us since our creation and will continue throughout all time. The other seashells also represent the Great Mother and her sacred influence over all things in creation. The sand is drifted into a series of great circles, signifying magickal mysteries; standing in a sacred circle, the magician, initiate, or seeker can move from time to timelessness, from multiples or oneness, from body obsessed conscious thought to the spirit-centered subconscious. These circles are repeated in the swirls of water around the dolphins as energy, reminiscent of stars, floats through the ocean waters. The symbolizes the spirit shining though the darkness of a troubled life and soul.
